What do NUS Conference and NUS Wales Conference delegates do?
What is NUS Conference?
Aberystwyth University Guild of Students is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS). NUS is a national body made up of affiliated students’ unions from universities and colleges across the UK. Its mission is to promote, defend and extend the rights of students and to develop and champion strong students' unions.
Each year, every Union that is a member of NUS elects a delegation of students to its National Conference. This year’s Conference takes place in Gateshead, Newcastle between the 12 -14 April 2011. The role of the Conference is to set the policies that will guide the NUS and direct its activities for the next twelve months. Delegates also elect NUS’ own National Executive Committee which is responsible for managing the affairs of NUS, and co-ordinates their campaigns, services and training. The Conference debates motions on a wide range of policy issues. Each Union is sends a specific number of delegates relative to the size of the University and Aberystwyth’s delegation number is four. The President (as delegate leader) and the President-elect automatically attend the Conference, which means that the Guild needs two other students to complete its delegation. Travel and accommodation at the conference will be provided for the elected delegates. It is an experience not to be missed, and is a great introduction into the world of student politics.
What is NUS Wales Spring Conference?
NUS Wales is an autonomous ‘special region’ of NUS UK. NUS Wales sets its own policy, elects its own executive committee and campaigns on issues that affect students studying in Wales. This year’s Spring Conference takes place in LLandrindod Wells on 31 March and 1 April 2011. The role of the Conference is to set policies that will guide NUS Wales and direct its activities for the next twelve months. Delegates also elect NUS Wales President and Deputy President. Aberystwyth have a delegation number of 4. The President (as delegate leader) and the President-elect automatically attend the Conference which means that the Guild needs two other students to complete its delegation. However, NUS Wales have a gender balance regulation which requires that at least half of the delegation must be female.
