At the Annual General Meeting of the Guild on Wednesday 9th May, we agreed to continue our affiliation with the National Union of Students and re-appointed KPMG LLP as our auditors. Jess Carr, Heather McLean and Duncan Haslam were elected to the Democratic Procedures Committee (who help organise and run meetings) and Ainsley Gilbert and Guy Drury were elected to Elections Committee (who help organise and run elections). Both committees still have free spaces on them, so there will be by-elections in October.
We also passed a number of motions. In brief, they were:
- a technical one limiting the number of members of the Democratic Procedures Committee to 6,
- one putting the UMCA President and Welsh Affairs Officer on the Council of the University (one of the decision-making bodies) instead of the Education Officer,
- one supporting the new integrated student media organisation and lobbying for more money and space for student media,
- one supporting the better integration of international students,
- one reforming the way sports and societies are managed and run,
- one in support of a new anti-bullying and anti- harrasment policy for the Guild,
- one in support of taking action against cuts to undergraduate funding,
- and finally, one that will change the Guild to a Union - a name change that will have effect from the start of the next academic year.
The policy document and the Constitution, Bye-Laws and Regulations of the Guild will updated in the next few days.
Next year, instead of General Meetings we'll be holding elections to a new Union Assembly in October. There will be a lot more information about this over the next few months, but in the mean time if you have any questions about this or any other aspect of democracy in the Guild (or now the Union!) feel free to email Guy Drury, the Guild Chair, at union.chairperson@aber.ac.uk.
