Y Geltaidd Y Geltaidd is the sports society that organizes teams such as Rugby, Football and Netball. They also organize the annual rugby trip. But sports are not the only responsibility of Y Geltaidd – they also organize crawls during the year, punch parties and grand dinners. Without a doubt, Y Geltaidd enriches the social life of Welsh students in Aber!
Aelwyd Pantycelyn Everyone and anyone is welcome to join the Pantycelyn choir. This is definitely one of the best ways to get to know other students from every year and there is always plenty of fun in the practices. The choir meets regularly on Tuesday and Thursday nights in the small lounge in Pantycelyn. As well as competing in the Cerdd Dant festival and the Urdd Eisteddfod and performing in concerts and services, the choir is known for its ‘lively’ nights out and everybody enjoys singing the old favorites in the Coopers. So join in even if you haven’t been a member of a choir before but want to try out something new, because that is the whole purpose of university. The conductor is Manon Mai Rhys mnr5@aber.ac.uk. Also if you are a good dancer you will be warmly welcomed by the Folk Dancing crew and the Recitation group also competes enthusiastically every year. Taliesin Society This is UMCA’s Literary Society which holds a number of events throughout the year. There is also an opportunity to get an occasional lesson on writing poetry. Welsh Language Society Cell This is the students’ cell which organizes events in town and in the county. They are very active and as well as campaigning they also organize nights of entertainment. They meet every Wednesday in the Lolfa (lounge) in Pantycelyn. Cymru X Cymru X is Plaid’s Youth Organization and according to the movement ‘Cymru X aims to encourage and enable young people in Wales to play a full and active role in the political process in Wales.’ They meet regularly in the Lolfa (lounge) in Pantycelyn. Christian Union A group of students who meet to worship God, to learn from the Bible, and encourage each other whilst considering the importance of Jesus Christ in their lives. Everyone is welcome to join; they meet every Thursday at 7pm in Pantycelyn and on several social nights during the year! Look out for posters. Bay Radio Bay Radio is a society in the Guild of Students. This year UMCA will be starting a Welsh radio show on Bay Radio so if you are interested in the media come to UMCA’s office for more information.
