The Guild Elections this year will take place on the 10th and 11th March entirely online, right here on the Guild website. There are eleven elections taking place, five of these are for sabbatical positions (full time student representatives), five are for executive officer positions (part time student representatives) and Guild Chairperson (chair of general meetings).
To cast your vote, follow the onscreen instructions to select the election and the list of candidates will appear. You will have the opportunity to read the candidates manifestos and watch any video they have produced. Alongside each candidate is a drop-down menu which allows you to select your preference for that candidate. You need to rank the candidates in your order of preference.
Once you have completed voting in all of the elections simply close the browser.
If you have any difficulties please contact Geraint Edwards, Returning Officer on gve@aber.ac.uk
How the voting system works
The Guild uses an voting system known as Single Transferrable Vote (STV) whereby each candidate is given a ranking of preference. Instead of just selecting your favourite candidate you can opt to choose your second favourite and so on until all the candidates have a ranking. Candidates need 50% plus one of the votes cast, known as quota, to win. If, after the first count, none of the candidates has reached this quota the candidate with the least votes is eliminated and their votes are split amongst the remaining candidates according to the next preference selected by the voter.
If you do not believe that any of the candidates in the election are electable you may choose Re-open Nominations (RON). If RON polls the highest number of votes then the election process is re-opened.
Finally, wherever you are on Wednesday or Thursday,
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE!!

No Smoking Day 2010
Are you contemplating giving up smoking but are not sure which direction to take - use patches, join a group, or rely on will power alone? Well, it’s worth bearing in mind that with support from Stop Smoking Wales, you are four times more likely to be successful in quitting and remaining smoke-free than using will power alone.
If you are interested in quitting, come and talk to us. We will be at Aberystwyth University Students Union on Wednesday 10th March between 11am and 1pm and at the University Health Centre on Thursday 11th March between 11am and 3.30pm. You will be able to discuss smoking and quitting in a friendly and non-judgemental way and find out more about the free support available locally. There will be an opportunity to use the Smokalyser to test your carbon monoxide levels, and there’ll be some freebies to give away.
Whether you have some questions or just want to pick up a leaflet, pop by and see us to find out how Stop Smoking Wales can help.
The Guild of Students is organising a game of rounders to get involved with the Right to Play awareness campaign in March and to raise money for youth focused charities. Formerly Olympic Aid, Right To Play is one of the largest children and youth focused charities in the world. Right To Play advocates that sport and play can offer children and youths better physical, social and emotional health by allowing them to express themselves in a safe and supportive environment where they can develop to their full potential. Furthermore, the natural convening power of sport serves to unite communities and reduce social tensions.
Anyone who wants to join in the fun on Wednesday March 10th at 2pm on the astro turf will have to pay £1
The recruitment period is now closed. The next anticipated recruitment period will be February 2011. Occasionally the Guild will recruit at other times in the year. The Guild strongly recommends you register with Joblink, situated next to the Guild shop. If additional vacancies occur, Joblink will be notified.
