Awards
Club of the Year
The most prestigious award of the evening. This award has been voted for by you and unanimously approved by us at the Athletic Union. There were many nominations and every club deserved an honourable mention. But we had to narrow it down, to three clubs that have strived to achieve success on all fronts during this year. They have represented the university very well and their committees and members deserve a huge pat on the back for their efforts this year. All are worthy winners but only one can take the award.
3rd Place - Men’s Hockey… 2nd Place – Women’s Cricket…
This year’s winners have excelled in their field of sport, and showed absolute dedication to all aspects of sport here in Aber. They have extended their club into the community by coaching young children; they have also given outstanding performances in other AU events such as Rugby 7s and Superteams and are a constant feature around campus and in Reload. Not only this they have topped their BUCS league only loosing one game, they just out in the final of the BUCS Cup, and have finished high in their Sunday league. This year’s unanimously voted club of the year we are proud to announce is:
Women’s Football

BUCS Team of the Year
This has been given to a team that has excelled in their BUCS Competition, and has represented the university on a national level. This was obviously a hard task to come to conclusion as we had five clubs top their leagues and have done so emphatically well this season.
3rd Place – Men’s Football 2nds (Outstanding Season) 2nd Place – Women’s Football
The winners this year have been outstanding in their BUCS league and have led the way in their chosen sport for the university, by getting to the welsh final outside BUCS and winning their league with two games to go the in BUCS and in their local league the BUCS Team of the Year this year is:
Men’s Hockey 1sts

Most Improved Club
This award is for the club that developed the most this year, they have shown dedication and spirit towards their work, and have made significant strides towards their goal in becoming a more established club here in Aber. There have been three stand out candidates this year, all have been improving for the last couple of years and this year have really come to the forefront of the Athletic Union.
3rd Place – Tarrannau Cheerleaders 2nd Place – Harriers Running Club
This years winner’s have developed beyond belief, they have worked to gain finances for their club to extend their club equipment, organising the strictly come aber event which was a great success. They have for the first time gained over 50 members in which they now have both a male and female team and this year were successful in gaining their first competitive wins. The work they have done this year in setting the pathway of development for many years to come really shows how hard the current committee have worked which myself and Gav have seen first hand. So Congratulations the winner of most improved club of the year is:
Aberystwyth Lacrosse

The Mary Ann Trophy
This award is for the person that has often given up their time to do the hard unseen work of University sports club. They are not often in the limelight, he or she is the person that fills in the forms keeps the finances in check and makes sure that the club is running to its maximum potential. The Mary Ann Award for administration this year had numerous nominations which were incredibly hard to narrow down, so much so we couldn’t narrow it down to the top three that we needed four. All of these people have shown great organisation skills and have been the backbone of their club being successful.
4th Place - James Hutton 3rd Place – Dylan Jones 2nd Place - Alice Hewson
Our winner this year his work is epitomised by the development of his club, Lacrosse have gone from strength to strength this year, and from the numerous emails that myself and Gav get from him, he truly has passion and drive for Lacrosse move forward and develop and we are glad to recognise Marc as an integral part of this development this year. The Mary Ann Trophy this year goes to:
Marc Denman (Lacrosse)

Gwyn Evans Trophy
This award is given in memory of a former PE Lecturer and club coach, and it recognises personal dedication, commitment and a commendable sporting attitude towards achievement in sport. This award recognises those that go above and beyond what is expected of them and live and breathe not only their sport but the whole ethos of university sport and what it represents. We have narrowed down this award to three people.
3rd Place – Rachel Smith 2nd Place – Connie Coppin
Our winner this year what can I say I say he’s a bit of a legend, and from the comical nomination I received for this person he is truly loved by the club he is involved in. If he is not having an allergic reaction to something or moaning about something, you can find him helping across all aspects of the university whether it’s in Pantycelyn or in Vic fields, he has coached for 5 years now and has driven women’s cricket to Plymouth and pushed the girls to maximise their potential resulting in the being in the premier league of BUCS this year. And I quote from the girls ‘ he has taken so much banter from the girls over the years for that alone he deserves an award’. And in another quote he has done all this in a non pervy. This years Gwyn Evan Trophy winner is:
Gaz Lanagan

Sports Person of the Year
This award is given to an individual who has excelled in her chosen field of sport and has enhanced the reputation of sport in Aberystwyth. For a small institution the abundance of talent in Aberystwyth is often undermined, we have extremely talented individuals turning out for the university in numerous competitions across the country. The three people that have been brought forward for this award have excelled at national level and we as an institution are proud to have them within our ranks. And we hope that they will carry on with their success.
3rd Place – Pete Bond (Fencing) 2nd Place Katie Foster (Cricket)
Our winner this year has been an active member of her club for the last 3 years and held committee positions, while also taking up the coaching role within the club twice a week. She finished 5th in the BUCS Championship 5000m competing against past and present Great Britain Athletes, and in this improved her personal best by over a minute. She narrowly missed out on the Welsh Cross Country crown coming 2nd, she is the current 5000m Welsh Senior Champion, She has continuously competed at national and international level so with this in mind, the award for Sports Person of the Year is:
Alaw Beynon Thomas

Sports Personality of the Year
This award goes to an individual who shows good sense of sportsmanship, personal flair, humour and enthusiasm for all aspects of their sport. They have been a regular member of their club, provided a sense of fun and most crucially provided the banter that is needed to university sport. This person is a constant presence in all AU events, never misses a Reload and most crucially epitomises the sense of community we have between sports clubs in Aberystwyth. The three people we have narrowed it down to this year have been fantastic members to their clubs and are a credit to the university.
3rd Place – George Baird 2nd Place – Matt Buley
Our winner this year is someone who is never short of something to say, she has provided a huge amount of banter in previous years and I can guarantee she never misses a reload. In spite of this she is incredibly serious about her sport and plays a good standard. She has been your sports officer this year and has helped in all the events. She is loved by her friends and many others in the university and watch out later when she’s on the prowl, this years Sports personality of the Year is:
Elizabeth Harrsion
