Shw’ mae!

Wel am ddechre’ prysur i swydd newydd! Ma’ llawer o bethe’ di’ mynd ymlaen yn y misoedd diwethaf megis, y gwelai bwnc, y cardiau bws ac adnewyddiad Urdd y Myfyrwyr ac rydw i, yng nghlwm â’r tîm sabothol wedi bod yn gweithio’n galed i drio sicrhau bod canlyniad pob penderfyniad wedi bod o les i chi y myfyrwyr.

Ar ôl ymweld ag undebau eraill dros yr haf, penderfynnais i bod hi’n hen bryd i Lywydd UMCA ystyried y rôl o ongl arall ac adnewyddu’r undeb fel bod hi’n ymateb ag anghenion myfyrwyr 2011!

Felly, ar ôl newid/gwella cyhoeddusrwydd UMCA, strwythur Pwyllgor Gwaith UMCA, system aelodaeth UMCA, dull cyfarthrebu UMCA â’r sefydliad/urdd/pobl allanol, a chyfansoddiad UMCA rydym ni wedi llwyddo i wneud y canlynol;

-          Torri record niferoedd aelodaeth (wrth gymharu â’r 2 flynedd diwethaf).

-          Torri record nifer o fyfyrwyr yn bresennol yn sesiwn ‘Aduniad Myfyrwyr Cymraeg’ (wrth gymharu â’r 2 flynedd diwethaf)

-          Torri record niferoedd a ddaeth i’r Sŵn cyntaf (wrth gymharu â’r 2 flynedd diwethaf)

-          Torri record o niferoedd o aelodau ail iaith/dysgwyr (wrth gymharu â’r 2 flynedd diwethaf)

-          Cynnal gwersi Cymraeg â strwythur mwy pendant sydd yn berthnasol i anghenion y myfyrwyr penodol.

-          Datbygu rôl newydd o fewn y pwyllgor gwaith, sef Swyddog Gweithgareddau Amgen, er mwyn cryfahu cyswllt UMCA â neuaddau eraill a chynnal digwyddiadau cymdeithasol lle nid alcohol yw’r cnewyllyn.

-          Helpu hen gymdeithas chwedlonol, ‘Cymdeithas Taliesin’, i ail ddechrau a thyfu o fewn y Cymry Cymraeg.

-          Datblygu hen syniad ‘UMCA yn y Gymuned’ mewn i weithred sydd mynd i cynnig cymorth i aelodau UMCA o fewn y byd gwaith, a chryfhau eu cyflogadwyedd.

-          Sicrhau gwell darpariaeth dwyieithog o ran cyhoeddusrwydd cymdeithasol yr Urdd ac felly dechrau pontio’r gwagle rhwng aelodau UMCA ac aelodau Urdd y Myfyrwyr.

-          Cysylltiad gryf rhwng y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol ac aelodau UMCA

Llwyddiant diweddara’ UMCA oedd Y Ddawns Ryng-golegol dydd Sadwrn diwethaf. Roedd y diwgwyddiad flynyddol hyn yn gweld myfywrwyr o Fangor, Caerdydd, Caerfyrddin, Abertawe ac Aberystwyth yn joio gyda’i gilydd yn y dre, ac yna yn y gig yn yr Undeb. Yn debyg i wythnos y glas leni cafodd UMCA ei canmol gan staff Pantycelyn a Heddlu Dyfed-Powys gan nad oes un arest wedi cymryd lle, dim ond un ymwelaid difrifol i A + E wedi bod, a’r nifer lleiaf o ‘call outs’ i’r porthorion/wardeiniaid ers amser maith.

Rydw i dros yr wythnosau diwethaf felly mynd i fod yn canolbwyntio ar adnewyddu cerddoriaeth Sŵn, parhau â threfniadau Gloddest a pharatoi ar gyfer lansiad ‘UMCA yn y Gymuned’ ym mis Ionawr.

Shw’ mae!

Well what a busy start to a new job! Loads has happened in the last few months like the bunk beds, the bus cards and the renovation of the Guild of Students, and alongside the rest of the Sab team I’ve been working hard to try and make sure that the result of every decision has been for the benefit of you, the students.

After visiting other unions in the summer, I decided it was about time for the UMCA President to look at the role from a different angle and rejuvenate the union so that it meets the needs of today’s students!

So, having changed/improved UMCA publicity, the structure of the UMCA Exec Committee, UMCA’s membership system, UMCA’s way of communicating with the institution/the guild/external bodies, and UMCA’s constitution, we have succeeded to do the following;

-          Break the record for number of members (compared to the last 2 years).

-          Break the record for number of students at the ‘Reunion of Welsh Students’ (compared to the last 2 years).

-          Break the record for number at the first Sŵn (compared to the last 2 years).

-          Break the record for number of second-language/learning members (compared to the last 2 years).

-          Hold Welsh lessons with a more definite structure which is relevant to the needs of individual students.

-          Develop a new role on the Exec Committee, ie, Alternative Activities Officer, in order to improve UMCA’s connection with other halls and hold social events that are not focused on alcohol.

-          Help the legendary society, ‘Cymdeithas Taliesin’, to re-form and grow within the Welsh community.

-          Develop an old idea of ‘UMCA in the Community’ into something that’s going to offer support to UMCA members in the world of work, and will improve their employability.

-          Ensure better bilingual provisions in terms of the Guild’s social publicity and therefore start to bridge the gap between UMCA members and Guild members.

-          Strong link between the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol and UMCA members.

UMCA’s latest success was the Rhyng-gol event last Saturday night. This annual event sees students from Bangor, Cardiff, Carmarthen, Swansea and Aberystwyth mixing together in town and then in the gig in the Union. Like Freshers Week this year, UMCA was praised by Pantycelyn’s staff and the Dyfed-Powys Police since no arrests had to be made, there was only one serious visit to A+E and the porters and wardens had the least number of call-outs for a long time.

Over the next few weeks then I’ll be concentrating on renewing the music at Sŵn, continuing with the arrangements for the UMCA Ball and preparing for the launch of ‘UMCA in the Community’ in January.
